The Slovenian Association Ivan Cankar in Geelong celebrated its 60th anniversary on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of November with a special program and dinner dance that were held on the Saturday evening. A highlight of the program itself was the speech given by Councillor Eddy Kontelj, a popular member of the Slovenian Community in Geelong and 2nd generation Australian Slovenian who spoke proudly of his association with the Ivan Cankar Club.
A number of other speeches and presentations were also made before a special plaque was unveiled listing the names and pictures of nearly all the past presidents of the association.
After a delicious traditional Slovenian dinner at the conclusion of the formal program, musical entertainment was provided the Melbourne band Žagarji late into the evening. The next day, the celebrations continued with a Mass and prayers at the club chapel. This was followed by lunch and a play performed by the Slovenian Drama Group from Melbourne. The name of the comedy literally translates to ‘Oh This Love!’ The afternoon concluded with musical entertainment being provided by the band Soča, which reformed especially for this occasion. All in all, it was a very successful event that will not be forgotten for a long time!
