Cleveland, 2.11.2017 – It is truly a milestone! Also in this month of February, Slovenia is celebrating Preseren Day, the Slovene Cultural Holiday, established in commemoration of her greatest poet France Preseren.
Coinciding with the anniversary of the poet’s death in 1849, the entire month is filled with a variety of cultural events such as school field trips, poetry readings, and dramatizations, culminating on the eve of the February 8th holiday in the presentation of two Grand Preseren Awards and up to six Preseren Fund Awards given to individuals or groups in recognition of their achievement in the fields of literature, art, music, and science. The celebrations are not confined to Slovenia but occur worldwide in many Slovenian enclaves including Cleveland.
The Slovenian American Times has taken advantage of this happy coincidence by organizing a much-needed fundraiser in support of their newspaper. The event will be on Sunday, February 12th at 11:30am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church hall. In store for their guests are a delicious dinner, a Chinese raffle, the opportunity to mingle with some very interesting “characters,” and performances by Slovenski pevski zbor Korotan, Avgust Bozidar Pust and Folklorna skupina Kres.
